Island MP Andrew Turner has called for agencies to pull together to help those who will lose their jobs at GKN Westland over the forthcoming months.

In the House of Commons Business questions session on Thursday, Mr Turner informed Robin Cook, MP Leader of the House of Commons that his constituents in East Cowes would be severely affected by the loss of 650 jobs at GKN Westland – more than half of the workforce there.

Mr Turner called for a debate next Tuesday on the down turn in the British aerospace industry and its inevitably adverse affects upon businesses like GKN Westland.

While not offering a debate, the Minister shared Mr Turner’s concern about the realities of British aviation at present and promised to promote action to support the industry and continue to encourage training and development within the industry to expedite a rebound.
