The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, this week visited Arreton St. George’s primary school. Following a tour of the school Mr Turner took part in a question and answer session with the children.
He said afterwards:
“I was very impressed by the standard of questions the children asked me. However one small girl, having asked how old I was when I became an MP, considered my answer for a few moments then suggested I might die soon – which was quite concerning!”
Mr Turner was given a tour of the school by Samantha Scovell, a year 6 Teaching Assistant, who is currently undertaking a university course with a view to becoming a teacher. As part of her course she has carried out a great deal of research on, and is about to produce a dissertation on, the impact of classroom layout on learning.
Mr Turner commented:
“I was interested to talk to Samantha about her ideas and findings, some of which she has demonstrated in her year 6 classroom to great effect. I was also very pleased to learn more about the latest teaching methods being applied in the primary sector which focuses on each child’s learning ability and keeping high achievers stimulated whilst not allowing less able children to fall too far behind.
“It is clear from the GCSE results this year that much needs to be done to improve education for the Island’s young people. That work must start in primary schools and this is certainly a step in the right direction.”
