Andrew Turner the Island’s MP welcomed the ‘tremendous’ news that Chale has won the Southern regional award in the Calor ‘Village of the Year’ award in 2005. The Island’s MP attended the awards luncheon yesterday with residents of Chale where they were presented with the prestigious award by guest of honour Alan Titchmarsh and Calor’s Managing Director, Howard Kerr.

Andrew Turner said

“Village life is the backbone of rural society and this competition is not about villages that are just picture postcards but looks for caring communities where villagers work together for the benefit of all residents. Last year Bembridge won a national award in the Information Technology category and this year Chale have taken the regional title of ‘Village of the Year’ against very stiff competition. Awards like these certainly remind us how lucky we are to live on the Island where we have thriving and vibrant communities and so many people who are prepared to give up their time for the common good.”

The Calor Competition assesses communities on six aspects of village life with categories in building community life, business, young people, older people, the environment and, judged separately, information communication technology.
