Island MP Andrew Turner has been re-elected to the influential Executive of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbench MPs. The committee keeps the leadership of the party informed of the mood of backbenchers and indirectly gives a voice to ordinary party members. It meets on Wednesday of each week to discuss forthcoming parliamentary business.
Mr Turner was originally elected to the Committee shortly after his election in 2001, earlier in his parliamentary career than any other Conservative MP. Every backbench Conservative MP is entitled to vote in the election of members of the Executive.
Mr Turner said
“I am very pleased and honoured to have received this vote of confidence from my peers. The Executive Committee works behind the scenes to make sure that the leadership is in close touch with the party and this is a very exciting time to be involved in making sure that all MPs are involved with the development of policy for the next election – whenever that may be.”
The committee is also known as the ‘backbenchers’ trade union and takes its name from the year in which the MPs who originally formed it were elected to Parliament.
