‘St George’s Day should be public holiday’ says MP

Andrew Turner believes that St George’s Day should be made a national holiday in England. The Island’s MP spoke out after enjoying the weekend’s annual St George’s Day celebrations in Cowes organised by the Rotary Club. The story of St George is a powerful allegory, emblematic of the triumph of good over evil; and also celebrates enduring Christian faith in the face of condemnation.

Mr Turner said

“St George’s Day provides a natural focus and an ideal opportunity for us all to celebrate England’s culture, traditions and history and many other areas of the country are now following Cowes’ lead and organising public celebrations. Many people celebrate St George’s Day because they believe it represents the essential spirit of England. A public holiday on April 23rd would also allow us to reclaim the flag of St George from the tiny minority who misuse it to promote fear and intolerance. It is high time that we promoted greater pride in our nation, in our flag and in our way of life.”

Mr Turner also congratulated the Rotary Club of Cowes and other branches of Rotary across the Island who helped in organising and putting on the celebrations.
