Island Conservatives have been reminded that they have three weeks to decide who should lead the Party. MP Andrew Turner, said that the two candidates would face the full rigour of scrutiny by the media during the campaign, and they should look at which candidate comes out of that process best.
Mr Turner said :
“Members of Parliament have concluded their role in the leadership election. We have two first class candidates, both of whom have a lot to offer both the Conservative Party and the country, for party members to choose between.
“The ballot papers have now been sent out out and party members have another three weeks to return them. I am sure that they will take time to see how each candidate performs under prolonged public scrutiny, even though the scrutiny they receive over the next few weeks will be nothing compared with the pressure one will face as Leader of the Opposition and hopefully as Prime Minister.
“I voted for party members to retain their say in who should lead the party because they get the same sort of picture of the candidates as members of the public get – through the press, television and radio. We know from the time of William Hague that it was no good electing a brilliant House of Commons performer who couldn’t connect with the public. Now is the time for party members to exercise their judgement and return their ballot papers for 6th December.”
